Rods and Reels

I like to use light spinning rods and reels for all my charters this allows the customer to have a good fight when playing the fish. Rods are TRO817S0 7′ sold by “The Reel Outdoors” this is 8-17 Test Line HG19. Reels by Penn Fierce 3000 series with a 6.2 1 gear ratio these reels seem to hold up well for me.

Tackle

I use a Carolina rig or what is sometimes called a fish finder rig. An Egg sinker is placed on your mainline depending on current conditions, 1/2 ounce to a 1 ounce normally works well it slides freely to the barrel swivel, I use Ande 15lb. test for the mainline. Hooks used are Kahle 1/0  for live bait or 2/0 for cut bait. made by Eagle Claw. Kahle or Circle hook set themselves on the strike , you do not jerk back on the rod to set the hook. Hooks are attached to a short piece of 30lb. test Ande leader.

Carolina Beach, Baldhead Island, Southport

If you are visiting any of these towns in the Cape Fear Region give me a call at 910-619-0928 I will be glad to show you the beauty of the backwaters of the Cape Fear River, on calm days we can fish for Spanish Mackerel of slow troll for King Mackerel all with in the sight of land. Carolina Beach has become quite popular for visitors from Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, not to mentioned the upper states to the North of us.
