Fishing Southport

Southport Fishing Charters

Southport Fishing Charters are beginning to increase the AR- 420 Tom McGlammmery Reef and the AR-425 Yaupon Beach Reef are both producing flounders. Small peanut menhaden on a Carolina rig seems to be the best combination for a successful trip. Flounders are also being caught along with the inter-coastal waterway system in the Southport area fishing the bulkheads, and around the bridges, and piers for the most consistent action.

Inshore fishing as of August 2020 has changed the Flounder season has just open back up. I have been fishing one of the straight grass shorelines in Cape Creek on the high end of the tide, with good success. Just last week we fished this bank and caught five keeper flounders. I plan on moving back further in the creek, there are some shallow areas with small islands with muddy banks that in years past have yield some 5lb. to 8lb. flounders.

I mainly like to fish Carolina Rigs with finger mullet in early fall, this year I have been fishing some jig heads with the Berkley Gulp baits with excellent success. Some of my younger fishermen just don’t seem to have the patience to fish the Carolina Rig which I tell them to cast and just let it sit. So I will give them a rod with the Berkley soft plastic and they can constantly reel it in slow, which will work for flounders.

Charter fishing is all about trying to make your guest have fun and feel at ease on the boat, sure you always want them to catch fish. I have been in this business for a long time now, any good fisherman knows there will be days that are slow no matter how many times you move from one spot to another you just cannot get a strike. This season the month of August we have had more rain and thunderstorms, it seems like we cannot get a break with just a clear day to fish.

One thing I know fall is on the way next week it will be September, hopefully we will see some Carolina Blue skies in Southport.
