Persistence and experience yield fish when fishing in the backwaters of the Cape Fear River. there are days when fishing can start out slow. I always try to recall past catches and days when it was slow, what worked that day should work again. I recall one day when the finger mullet were everywhere lots of bait activity just no bites, I cast out a bottom rig with shrimp and caught a croaker out in the deeper water of Buzzard Bay. I cut the croaker up in 2″ wide strips about 4″ in length made a cast to the shoreline that had a deep drop off just as the cut bait settled to the bottom a red drum engulf the bait and made a hard run with the current. The fresh-cut bait made all the difference in the bite for that day.

Fresh Cut Baits

Croakers, Bluefish, Shark, just about in freshly cut up fish will make excellent cut bait strips for Red Drum. Flounders will often bite a freshly cut strip bait when casting it to the bank with a steep drop off.

Sandbars

When fishing the flats at low tide keep and eye for sandbars that run parallel to the bank. Sand bars that have a sandy bottom in front of them, the drum will travel in front of these bars following the current, some of my best catches of red drum occur with this scenario.

Backwater fishing in the Cape Fear River can be a challenge finding fish, Greg Buffe took his son Will fishing with the Cape Fear Guide out of Bald Head Marina. The morning started out kinda slow, persistence and experience yield fish coming in the boat as the morning progressed.
