Weather Conditions

Thursday morning was a perfect day to be on the water as far as wind, and temperature, the only thing we had working against us was low tide. Fished Cape Creek to start with, no luck moved into Buzzard Bay found the Black Drum biting shrimp in the channel, fish were fighting hard, nice size for eating.

Finding Fish

I remember this charter well, started out fishing Cape Creek, no luck. Tide was low so I moved to a part Buzzard Bay where the current had begun to move. Found an oyster bed, anchored right in front of it, started making cast out into the deeper water. The first cast a client had a hard hit, hooking a keeper, Black Drum. The other anglers baited up with shrimp and they all started catching Black Drum. This one-stop yield a nice catch of Black Drum and made for some happy anglers.

Tackle and Gear

A 7′ Spinning Rod sold by “The Reel Outdoors” out of Emerald Isle, N.C. TRO817S0 8-17lb. test rated line HG19. These are my all-around go-to spinning rod very reasonably priced with the right tip for catching Black Drum or Red Drum. Reels used Penn Fierce11 3000 series, I use only Anded line 15 lb. test to fill the spinning reels, using Ande 30 lb. test for a 5′ leader. A standard Carolina Rig with a 1/0 Kahle hook by Eagle Claw.

Bait

I always try to use live bait menhaden or live finger mullet on all my charters, because it works! They are times when fresh shrimp works extremely well for Black Drum and Red Drum so when you are going fishing don’t forget the Shrimp. In the middle of the summer when it really gets hot a fresh cut-up croaker cut in 4″ strips can be a deadly Red Drum bait. Have caught quite a few flounder on a 4″ strip of fresh cut bait.
