Backwater Fishing – Capt. Mike Dennis

Backwater fishing Capt. Mike Dennis out of Carolina Beach, N.C. has become quite popular over the last 15 years. Leaving out of Carolina Beach you will experience a ride south on the Cape Fear River, depending on the stage of the tide. Tide stage is up you will travel along the rock wall jetty from Fort Fisher to the entrance of Muddy Slough leading into Buzzard Bay. The tide stage is low you will travel the river channel to Southport, make a turn toward Bald Head Island shoot across some flats, and enter by the 10 leg tower. Lot’s to see along the way.

Red Drum, Speckled Trout, Flounder

Red Drum is the target species I try to catch for the strike is rod bending, with several runs. Flounder and Speckled trout are also caught in the same places the red drum are caught. Other fish, from croakers to stingrays, sharks, bluefish, baby groupers, pufferfish are landed. The scenery is beautiful, peaceful, with the sounds of the marsh hens, you might even spot a Bald Eagle perched on a driftwood branch.

Weather Conditions

This charter had calm winds, the sun was out but not too hot as you can see from the photos, beautiful scenery.

Backwater Fishing – Capt. Mike Dennis that day was exciting everyone caught Red Drum, with the lady anglers having an exceptional day of fishing. Light tackle spin fishing with live bait gives anglers whether experienced or novice to a chance to land a nice fish. My charters are a hands-on fishing experience where you will see the tactics and strategies I employ to find these fish.

Baits

I normally fish with live finger mullet, live menhaden, cut bait, or fresh shrimp, most of the time I have the live bait caught before the charter begins. On some mornings when the tide is on the upper stage live bait is caught during the charter.
